Former Chief Justice of India BR Gavai visited the renowned ‘Temple of the Tooth’, also known as ‘Sri Dalada Maligawa’, in Kandy during his visit to Sri Lanka.
People regard the sacred Buddhist shrine as one of Sri Lanka’s most important religious landmarks, and it enshrines the holy tooth relic of Lord Buddha, attracting pilgrims and visitors from across the globe.
Justice Gavai was accompanied by Ms Saranya VS, Assistant High Commissioner of India in Kandy, along with senior officials from the Indian High Commission.
During the visit, the former Chief Justice offered prayers at the temple and took part in the religious customs observed at the historic site. His visit reflected the enduring spiritual and cultural ties shared by India and Sri Lanka through their Buddhist heritage.
Temple authorities welcomed Gavai and briefed him on the historical and religious significance of the shrine. He later visited the sanctum sanctorum, where devotees preserve the sacred relic with deep reverence.
The former Chief Justice also received blessings from the Head Monk of the temple during the ceremonial interaction.
The occasion highlighted the spiritual importance of the visit and the warm reception extended to the Indian delegation.
The ‘Temple of the Tooth’ remains among Sri Lanka’s most prominent pilgrimage destinations. It is also internationally recognised for its religious importance and architectural beauty.
Situated in the historic city of Kandy, the shrine continues to symbolise Buddhist faith and heritage.
Gavai’s visit formed part of his wider engagements during his stay in Sri Lanka.
The participation of Indian diplomatic officials alongside the former Chief Justice reflected the importance of cultural exchanges. It also highlighted the friendly relations between the two countries.
The visit further reaffirmed the longstanding civilisational and spiritual links between India and Sri Lanka. It also highlighted the shared Buddhist traditions that continue to strengthen bilateral ties.
