Parts of Delhi NCR received unexpected rainfall on Saturday, offering short-term relief from rising temperatures, though air pollution levels remained largely elevated across the region.
The showers, along with overcast and slightly hazy conditions, helped bring down the heat for a while. Data, however, indicates that this change in weather had only a limited effect on improving air quality.
According to figures released by the Central Pollution Control Board, most monitoring stations continued to report Air Quality Index (AQI) readings in the ‘Poor’ range.
Areas such as Anand Vihar, Wazirpur and Mundka recorded particularly high pollution levels, while Jahangirpuri and Narela also remained in a similar category.
Some locations, including Ashok Vihar, Bawana, and parts of Dwarka, showed relatively better conditions, with AQI levels falling into the ‘Moderate’ bracket.
A few areas, such as Sonia Vihar and the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, reported comparatively lower readings, though still not within the ‘Satisfactory’ range.
Meteorologists have linked the rainfall to a Western Disturbance, a weather system known to bring intermittent showers to north India outside the monsoon season.
Earlier this week, the Commission for Air Quality Management activated the first stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) after the city’s average AQI crossed into the ‘Poor’ category.
The framework outlines a set of escalating measures to control pollution depending on severity levels.
Health Risks and Outlook
Air quality is measured on a scale of 0 to 500, with higher values indicating greater health risks. While moderate levels may affect vulnerable groups, prolonged exposure to ‘Poor’ conditions can impact the wider population, according to pollution control authorities.
Despite the brief spell of rain, officials indicate that sustained improvements in air quality would depend on stronger weather systems and consistent mitigation efforts.
