Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai on Sunday. She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday.

Maharashtra Culture Minister Ashish Shelar confirmed the news outside the hospital. Her last rites are scheduled to take place at Shivaji Park on Monday at 4:00 PM.

A day earlier, her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle said the singer was hospitalised. She attributed it to extreme exhaustion and a chest infection.

Requesting privacy for the family, she posted an update on Instagram, stating, “My grandmother, Asha Bhosle due to extreme exhaustion and suffering a chest infection has been admitted to hospital and we request you to value our privacy. Treatment is ongoing and hopefully everything will be well and we shall update you positively.🙏🏼”

Asha Bhosle began her career at a young age, recording her first playback song for the 1943 Marathi film Majha Bal. Over the years, she became one of the most influential voices in Indian cinema.

Her repertoire includes timeless classics such as Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko, Do Lafzon Ki Hai Dil Ki Kahani, Kya Ghazab Karte Ho Ji, O Haseena Zulfonwale Jane Jahan, and Ye Ladka Hay Allah Kaisa Hai Diwana.

Asha Bhosle showcased remarkable versatility, singing in around 20 Indian and international languages.

In 2006, Asha Bhosle revealed that she had recorded nearly 12,000 songs. Throughout her illustrious career, she collaborated with renowned composers including Shankar-Jaikishan, RD Burman, OP Nayyar, Ilaiyaraaja, Bappi Lahiri, and AR Rahman.

Her contributions to music earned widespread recognition. She received numerous accolades. These included the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
