Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday rejected allegations of any understanding between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Trinamool Congress legislator Humayun Kabir, calling the two ‘poles apart’.
Responding to claims of a ‘Kabir-BJP deal’ aimed at polarising voters in poll-bound West Bengal, Shah took a swipe at Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, suggesting her party could be behind the viral audio clip.
“You aren’t aware of Mamata’s capabilities; she can make 2,000 such videos,” he said.
Shah categorically ruled out any alliance with Kabir’s newly formed party, stating that ideological differences were irreconcilable.
“Humayun Kabir and the BJP are two poles apart, North Pole and South Pole. We would rather sit in opposition for another 20 years, rather than aligning with a party that calls for building the Babri masjid in Bengal,” he said.
Trinamool leaders, including Firhad Hakim and Aroop Biswas, sparked the controversy during a press conference by labelling Kabir the BJP’s ‘B-team’. They alleged a clandestine agreement worth Rs 1,000 crore to create religious divisions ahead of elections.
At the centre of the row is an unverified audio clip purportedly featuring Kabir. In it, he is allegedly heard assuring BJP leaders of support in dislodging the Trinamool from power by consolidating Hindu votes while splitting Muslim voters.
The clip also claims Kabir was in touch with Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
Following the controversy, Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) announced it was withdrawing from its alliance with Kabir’s Aam Aadmi Unnayan Party, further intensifying the political fallout.
