Bihar CM Nitish Kumar To Take Rajya Sabha Oath On April 10

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is likely to take oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on April 10, according to sources. He will travel to Delhi on April 8 or 9 to complete the necessary formalities in the Upper House of Parliament.

After returning to Patna, Kumar will step down as Chief Minister any time after April 13, paving the way for a significant political transition in the state.

Political activity will gather momentum after April 14, marking the end of the ‘Kharmas’ period, considered inauspicious in Hindu tradition.

The Bihar Home Department has confirmed that Kumar will continue to receive ‘Z Plus’ category security even after demitting office.

The directive, issued by the Special Branch, stated that his security cover would remain unchanged upon assuming his new role in the Rajya Sabha.

The decision followed a detailed review under the Bihar Special Security Act, 2000, with instructions issued to the Director General of Police and the Special Branch to ensure the highest level of protection.

The ‘Z Plus’ category represents the highest level of security in India, typically reserved for top dignitaries, including the Prime Minister and senior political leaders. It involves a multi-layered arrangement comprising around 55 personnel, including personal security officers, armed guards, escort vehicles, and continuous surveillance.

Nitish Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 and resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30, marking a key political shift. He has also inspected a residence at 7 Circular Road ahead of stepping down, signalling an impending change in Bihar’s leadership.
