Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday presided over a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the rapidly changing situation in West Asia and analyse its potential impact on India’s national priorities.
The meeting marked the second CCS review since tensions intensified on February 28, 2026, following airstrikes by the United States and Israel on locations in Iran, along with subsequent countermeasures.
These incidents have disrupted the region, particularly affecting the Strait of Hormuz, and have led to instability in global energy markets.
The evening meeting saw the participation of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal were also part of the discussions. Additional senior leaders, including Shivraj Singh Chouhan, JP Nadda, and Ashwini Vaishnaw, attended the session.
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Cabinet Secretary TV Somanathan, along with senior officials, were also present.
Cabinet Secretary TV Somanathan presented an in-depth overview of the global situation and outlined actions being undertaken or considered across ministries.
Impact Across Key Sectors Assessed
The discussions examined the potential effects of the crisis across various timeframes on sectors such as energy, fertilisers, agriculture, MSMEs, exports, logistics, trade, finance, and supply chains.
Given that nearly 20 per cent of global oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, India is carefully evaluating possible disruptions due to its reliance on West Asian energy supplies.
Officials are also analysing the potential consequences for fuel costs, aviation services, and industrial inputs.
The meeting included a review of the macroeconomic environment while exploring both immediate response measures and long-term resilience strategies. This review follows a similar CCS meeting held the previous week to track developments in the region.
The government continues to focus on diversifying energy sources, maintaining adequate reserves of essential goods, and ensuring uninterrupted domestic supply chains.
India has consistently urged restraint, dialogue, and the safeguarding of civilian lives and infrastructure, while maintaining a balanced diplomatic stance amid ongoing global uncertainty.
