Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the Nalanda stampede and announced financial assistance for the victims’ families.

In a statement shared by the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Modi conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and expressed concern for the injured.

An ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund was announced for the next of kin of each deceased, while the injured will receive Rs 50,000.

The incident occurred during prayers at the Mata Sheetla Temple in Nalanda, where a stampede left seven people dead and one seriously injured, according to police. The tragedy took place in the Deepnagar police station area, where a large number of devotees had gathered.

Following the incident, police personnel and local residents rushed to the temple premises and began rescue operations. Visuals from the site showed a significant crowd inside the temple complex.

Rescue teams continue operations, and nearby hospitals are treating the injured.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also expressed grief over the incident and assured that all necessary assistance is being provided to affected families. He said arrangements are underway to ensure proper medical care for the injured.

Authorities remain at the site and have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the stampede.
