MEA Flags Balance Between Fuel Exports And Domestic Needs

India has stated that it is examining energy supply requests from neighbouring countries while keeping its domestic priorities in focus. The approach reflects a balance between regional assistance and internal demand management.

Speaking at the weekly briefing, Randhir Jaiswal said, “About energy, we have received requests from several of our neighbouring countries, and I had spoken about this earlier as well. We have received requests from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and some other neighbouring countries. As I had indicated earlier, India has been supplying diesel to Bangladesh since 2007 through various modes of transportation. We are continuing to assist Bangladesh and our other neighbours even currently. This is being done while factoring in our own requirements, refining capacity, and diesel availability.”

The government has made it clear that domestic consumers will be prioritised in energy distribution.

Officials indicated that local demand will be met first before decisions are taken on external supply.

The MEA flagged concerns regarding LPG availability due to disruptions in shipping routes linked to tensions in West Asia. This situation has affected supply chains and requires careful monitoring.

India continues to be a major exporter of refined petroleum products, particularly to neighbouring nations.

Officials stated that requests for diesel supply are being reviewed in line with national requirements.

Energy ties with Bangladesh are supported by formal agreements and infrastructure such as waterways, rail networks and the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline. These mechanisms have ensured a consistent fuel supply over the years.

The government has reiterated that all decisions on fuel exports will consider domestic demand, refining capabilities and availability. This measured approach aims to maintain both national energy security and regional cooperation.
