Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Micron’s semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking the commencement of commercial production.
Addressing the gathering, he emphasised that India’s semiconductor blueprint extends beyond a single manufacturing unit.
PM Modi stated that a genuine ecosystem integrates engineers, chip designers, research bodies, logistics chains and highly trained technicians.
He underlined that the government is strengthening the entire semiconductor value chain.
In the latest Union Budget, authorities introduced the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 to accelerate domestic capacity.
The Prime Minister explained that as output rises, demand for raw materials, components and associated services will expand within India.
He described this as a transformative opportunity for national manufacturing growth.
Under the Semicon India initiative, ten projects have already secured approval.
Apart from Micron, three additional facilities will commence production shortly.
PM Modi clarified that the semiconductor network will not be concentrated in a single geography.
Instead, new technology clusters are emerging across the nation, supporting the vision of a developed India.
Strategic Technology Imperative
The Prime Minister compared microchips to oil, calling them the defining resource of the present century.
He asserted that India resolved to advance swiftly in semiconductors even during the global COVID-19 crisis.
PM Modi noted that while the twentieth century revolved around factories and mass manufacturing, the current era belongs to artificial intelligence.
Semiconductor chips, he said, serve as the bridge connecting the Industrial Revolution to the AI revolution.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Sanand facility as evidence of strong collaboration between India and the United States.
He stressed that both democracies are working to secure resilient supply chains in artificial intelligence and chip technologies.
The Prime Minister thanked Micron’s leadership and commended CEO Sanjay Mehrotra for sustained confidence in India’s semiconductor landscape.
Referring to policy reforms, he observed that Advance Pricing Agreements often take three to five years to implement in developed economies.
India, however, finalised approvals within months. He attributed this efficiency to decisive governance and clear developmental intent.
Prime Minister Modi detailed the project’s timeline: the memorandum of understanding was signed in June 2023, ground-breaking occurred in September 2023, pilot machinery installation took place in February 2024, and commercial production began in February 2026.
He concluded that the 80MP Micron facility symbolises India’s modern approach, progressing decisively from policy formulation to production execution.
