In natural habitats, an octopus may sacrifice an arm to distract predators and secure escape. The detached limb continues to move, creating a diversion while the animal retreats.

Amphibians such as frogs and toads shed their skin at regular intervals. They then ingest the sloughed skin.
This practice recycles protein, maintains skin condition and removes scent traces that predators might detect.
Snakes occasionally consume their shed skins. In rare cases, particularly in captivity or under stress, some snakes may bite their own tails.
Though uncommon in the wild, scientists have recorded such incidents in confined settings.
