President Trump, Prime Minister Modi Hold Phone Talks Ahead Of Jaishankar US Visit

US President Donald Trump spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, a day before External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar begins an official visit to the United States.

The conversation drew attention in diplomatic, political, and business circles across both countries.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed the call in a brief social media post. He stated that President Trump had spoken with Prime Minister Modi and added ‘stay tuned’, without sharing further details.

Neither government issued an official readout of the discussion.

Officials believe this marked the first conversation between the two leaders this year.

Since last summer, Trump and Modi have reportedly spoken around ten times. Their regular engagement reflects the sustained momentum in India–US relations.

The call came as both countries move closer to finalising a bilateral trade agreement.

Negotiators have focused discussions on market access, tariff structures, and resilient supply chains.

Officials familiar with the talks say negotiations have entered the concluding stage.

Trump has publicly praised Modi’s leadership in recent months. In November, he also expressed his intention to visit India this year.

A presidential visit is expected to align with the upcoming QUAD summit.

Earlier the same day, India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced that Jaishankar will travel to the US this week.

He will attend the Critical Minerals Ministerial convened by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

According to the MEA, the meeting will address supply chain resilience, clean energy transitions, and strategic cooperation in critical minerals.

During his visit, Jaishankar will also hold meetings with senior members of the US administration.

The MEA did not disclose specific schedules or agendas. Observers expect the discussions to cover broader regional and global developments.

The timing of Trump’s call highlighted the steady pace of high-level engagement between New Delhi and Washington.

It also coincided with intensified talks on trade and strategic supply chains.

Critical minerals have become central to bilateral cooperation, particularly for clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and national security.

India and the US have expanded collaboration across defence, technology, and energy sectors in recent years.

The QUAD partnership, which includes India, the US, Japan, and Australia, remains a key platform for Indo-Pacific coordination.

Officials on both sides describe the India-US relationship as one of the most consequential for the decade ahead.
