Pakistan has decided not to play its much-anticipated Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 match against India. The fixture was scheduled to take place at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on February 15.
The decision follows limited approval granted by the federal government. This approval allows the team to compete in the tournament under specific conditions.
The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan stated that it had allowed the national side to participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. However, the approval clearly excluded participation in the fixture against India.
While the statement did not outline the rationale behind the move, it has been widely interpreted as a political and diplomatic signal.
The development is believed to be linked to Bangladesh’s recent exit from the tournament. Bangladesh were removed from the Men’s T20 World Cup after requesting that their matches be shifted out of India, citing security concerns. Scotland subsequently replaced them in Group C, a decision that appears to have influenced Pakistan’s stance.
PCB Deliberations and Early Verdict
Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi had earlier met Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to discuss the team’s participation in the global event. Naqvi had indicated that a final call would be taken between January 30 and February 2.
Contrary to the earlier timeline, the government announced its decision a day ahead of schedule. This move raised fresh concerns for tournament organisers. It particularly highlighted the potential loss of revenue from the marquee India–Pakistan clash.
The PCB had also delayed the launch of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup jersey, reportedly awaiting confirmation on the team’s participation.
Former champions Pakistan lifted the T20 World Cup trophy in 2009. The team have been placed in Group A alongside India, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the United States.
Pakistan will compete in the tournament under the leadership of Salman Ali Agha. They will begin their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on February 7 in Colombo.
The absence of the India–Pakistan match is expected to pose operational challenges for the ICC. It is also likely to have commercial implications due to the fixture’s unmatched global appeal.
