Actor Kamaal Rashid Khan, popularly known as KRK, was on Saturday placed in police custody until January 27 by a Bandra court in connection with the Oshiwara firing case, according to Mumbai Police officials.
After the court passed the remand order, the actor was escorted to the Oshiwara Police Station for further interrogation. During the court proceedings, Khan stated that the gunshots were discharged accidentally. He further asserted that there was no malicious intent behind the incident.
The police informed the court that they are closely examining the motive behind the firing. They also said they are cross-checking the statements given by the accused and confirmed that he is cooperating with the investigation.
Earlier, Mumbai Police arrested KRK after he was identified as the main accused. The arrest was made in connection with a two-round firing incident reported from the Oshiwara area.
Police officials said the shots were allegedly fired while the actor was cleaning his firearm at his residence. They added that he was testing whether the weapon was functioning properly at the time.
As per the investigation, KRK had legally obtained a firearm and gun licence from Uttar Pradesh in 2005. He later brought the weapon to Mumbai, where it remained at his residence for nearly 20 years.
Firearm Procedure and Incident Details
Police further revealed that ahead of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections, the actor deposited his firearm at the Versova Police Station following the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. After the restrictions were lifted, he collected the weapon as per procedure.
Investigators said that a few days after retrieving the firearm, KRK was cleaning it at home when two rounds were allegedly discharged towards a tree on Lokhandwala Back Road. Owing to strong winds, the bullets reportedly veered off course and hit the nearby Nalanda building. No injuries were reported in the incident.
The Oshiwara Police registered a case and initiated an investigation from multiple angles. The firing incident took place on January 18, when bullets struck a residential building in Oshiwara, Andheri.
During the investigation, police recovered two bullets from the Nalanda Society—one from the second floor and another from the fourth floor. Further inquiry into the matter is ongoing.
