India batters showcased a stunning batting display to chase down 208 runs with 28 balls to spare, securing a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second T20 International of the five-match series at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium. The comprehensive win has given India a commanding 2-0 lead in the series.
New Zealand batted first after winning the toss and posted a competitive 208/6 in 20 overs. Skipper Mitchell Santner led the way for the Black Caps with a well-timed 47 not out off 27 balls, while Rachin Ravindra contributed 44 runs.
Despite a bright start, none of the Kiwi batters managed a large individual score, and India’s bowlers ensured the total remained chaseable.
For India, Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler, taking two wickets for 35 runs. Hardik Pandya, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Shivam Dube took one wicket each.
Early Setback for India in the Chase
India’s run chase, however, began on shaky ground. Both Indian openers, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, were dismissed cheaply inside the first couple of overs, leaving the visitors reeling at 6/2 early in the chase.
At this critical juncture, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav combined to seize control of the game.
Kishan attacked fiercely from the outset, smashing 76 runs off just 32 balls, including a flurry of boundaries and sixes that put New Zealand’s bowlers on the back foot. His counter-attacking innings changed the momentum of the match and laid a strong foundation for the chase.
At the other end, captain Suryakumar Yadav played one of his finest T20 innings in recent times, remaining unbeaten on 82 off 37 deliveries.
Suryakumar’s innings was a blend of power and precision, ending India’s long wait for a big T20 score and marking his first fifty in 23 innings.
The partnership of 122 runs in just 48 balls between Kishan and Suryakumar defined the chase and effectively shattered New Zealand’s hopes of defending their total.
India reached 209/3 in 15.2 overs, completing one of their joint-highest successful run chases in T20I history.
Ishan Kishan was awarded ‘Player Of The Match’ for his fiery batting display and an excellent catch in the outfield.
This emphatic victory not only highlighted the depth of India’s batting lineup but also served as a statement performance ahead of bigger challenges in the T20 calendar.
New Zealand will look to regroup quickly as the series moves forward, while India will aim to maintain momentum with continued batting firepower and tactical discipline.
