Experts Verify Home Remedies That Relieve Persistent Cough Safely

Health experts confirm that simple home remedies can effectively relieve persistent coughs, especially during seasonal transitions.

Changes in temperature and air quality often trigger coughing in young adults, particularly those sensitive to dust, pollen, or those with reduced immunity.

While over-the-counter syrups provide relief in some cases, natural solutions continue to play a supportive role in soothing the throat and strengthening the immune response.

Dr Vivek Jain, Senior Director and Head of Paediatrics at Fortis Hospital, explains that weather fluctuations commonly cause two types of coughs: dry and wet.

Dry coughs irritate the throat without producing mucus, while wet coughs involve mucus and may indicate infections such as the flu or bronchitis.

Identifying the type of cough allows individuals to adopt faster and more targeted remedies.

Medical experts consistently validate honey as a reliable home remedy. Its antimicrobial and soothing properties help reduce throat irritation and suppress coughing.

Consuming a teaspoon of honey before bedtime or mixing it with warm water can provide noticeable relief.

Ginger also earns expert approval for its anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects. Drinking ginger tea or combining freshly grated ginger with honey can help relax the throat muscles and reduce cough intensity.

However, experts advise individuals with underlying medical conditions to seek medical guidance before frequent use.

Inhaling steam infused with tulsi leaves for 10 minutes helps loosen mucus and ease chest congestion.

Tulsi, or holy basil, supports respiratory health due to its natural antimicrobial qualities. Doctors also recommend warm saltwater gargles, which reduce inflammation and draw out excess mucus from the throat.

Experts stress the importance of hydration. Drinking eight to ten glasses of warm fluids daily thins mucus and speeds recovery.

Avoiding cold beverages, smoking, and air irritants further protects the respiratory tract.

Using a humidifier indoors can prevent throat dryness, while breathing exercises such as pranayama help calm persistent coughing.

Health professionals urge medical consultation if a cough lasts longer than three weeks, produces blood, causes high fever, triggers wheezing, or leads to breathing difficulty.

Persistent symptoms require clinical evaluation.

Health platforms shared an informational video demonstrating these expert-backed remedies. The video reinforces verified guidance and discourages misinformation about unproven treatments.
