US President Donald Trump on Tuesday shared screenshots of private messages from French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte concerning Greenland, Syria, and Iran, heightening a diplomatic standoff with Europe.
In the message shared by Trump, Macron praised the US role in Syria and offered cooperation on Iran, but questioned Trump’s actions in Greenland.
He proposed arranging a G7 meeting in Paris after the World Economic Forum in Davos, inviting multiple international leaders for discussions and a dinner prior to Trump’s return to the US.
Trump also posted Rutte’s message, in which the NATO Secretary General lauded US initiatives in Syria, Gaza, and Ukraine, and reaffirmed his commitment to finding a way forward on Greenland.
The messages follow Trump’s announcement of a 200 per cent tariff on French wines and champagnes, issued after Paris criticised the US position on Greenland.
Since returning to office in 2025, Trump has repeatedly indicated his desire to ‘obtain’ Greenland, citing longstanding security concerns and strategic competition in the Arctic.
Greenland, a self-governing territory under Denmark, hosts a major US military base and has grown in strategic significance amid rising global interest in the Arctic.
Trump’s publicising of the messages reflects an escalating diplomatic standoff with European capitals, underscoring tensions over Arctic security, Greenland’s strategic importance, and broader US foreign policy priorities.
The incident highlights ongoing friction between Washington and Europe, illustrating how Arctic strategy and geopolitical competition continue to shape US-European relations.
Analysts note that Trump’s direct approach and social media disclosures signal a more confrontational US posture, further complicating diplomacy with key European allies while emphasising the Arctic’s increasing role in global security and international strategy.
