More than 100 students at Xinghui Middle School in Foshan, Guangdong Province, have fallen ill with norovirus, local health authorities reported on Saturday.
Fortunately, no critical or fatal cases have been recorded, and all students remain in stable condition.
Norovirus is a common pathogen that causes acute gastroenteritis, leading to symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea.
Following the outbreak, the school campus has been thoroughly disinfected. Health officials have begun monitoring students closely, including attendance checks, while an epidemiological survey is underway to trace the infection.
According to Guangdong provincial disease control authorities, the region enters its annual norovirus season between October and March.
Norovirus outbreaks are highly contagious and tend to peak during colder months in countries above the equator.
Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide. Globally, an estimated 685 million cases occur annually, with 200 million affecting children under five.
The virus contributes to approximately 200,000 deaths each year, including 50,000 among young children, primarily in low-income countries.
The economic burden is significant, with healthcare costs and losses estimated at $60 billion annually.
The first documented norovirus outbreak occurred in 1968 at a school in Norwalk, Ohio, giving the virus its original name, Norwalk virus.
Unlike influenza, norovirus causes gastroenteritis, often referred to as ‘stomach flu’, rather than respiratory illness.
Health authorities emphasise hygiene and timely disinfection to prevent further spread.
Outbreaks typically occur between November and April in northern hemisphere countries, and between April and September in southern hemisphere nations.
Near the equator, the virus does not follow a distinct seasonal pattern.
Officials continue to monitor the situation in Foshan, ensuring that students receive proper care and containment measures remain in place to prevent additional infections.
