Wikipedia, often hailed as the world’s largest online encyclopedia, marked its 25th anniversary on January 15, 2026, launching a year-long global campaign to celebrate its silver jubilee under the themes ’25 years of the free encyclopedia’ and ’25 years of humanity at its best’.
Entrepreneur Jimmy Wales, along with co-founder Larry Sanger, officially launched the platform on January 15, 2001, providing free, collaboratively edited knowledge in over 300 languages.
What began as a modest complement to the peer-reviewed Nupedia project has grown exponentially into a cornerstone of the internet, powered entirely by millions of volunteer editors worldwide—without a central newsroom, paywalls, and with a commitment to neutrality, verifiability, and open access.
The homepage of Wikipedia.org now features special anniversary branding, including a redesigned puzzle globe logo hiding a ‘special new friend’ mascot for users to discover, along with interactive surprises and the prominent tagline: ‘Wikipedia 25 — 25 years of the free encyclopedia’.
The site emphasises that ‘people, not machines, created the internet we were promised’ and encourages the small percentage of readers who contribute financially to sustain Wikipedia.
Wikimedia Foundation’s Jubilee Initiatives
The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that supports Wikipedia, kicked off the celebrations with several initiatives:
- A digital time capsule exploring Wikipedia’s history—from its humble origins and early server installations by Jimmy Wales to pivotal moments like near-server crashes during major global events (e.g., Michael Jackson’s death in 2009) and quirky entries like the prescient octopus Paul.
- A mini docuseries and interviews spotlighting volunteer editors from around the world, showcasing the diverse individuals behind the content and what motivates them to contribute.
- Partnerships with tech companies (including new collaborations with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity, alongside existing ones like Google) through Wikimedia Enterprise, highlighting Wikipedia’s role in powering AI and reliable knowledge access.
- Community events, from local meetups (for example, in San Francisco, Portland, and the MIT Libraries’ symposium) to user group celebrations, encourage new contributors and recognise long-time editors.
Jimmy Wales reflected on the milestone: “Against all odds, Wikipedia has grown to become the backbone of knowledge on the internet today, proving that when people come together in the spirit of building trust and collaboration, they can make the impossible possible.”
Today, Wikipedia boasts:
- Over 66 million articles across all language editions (with the English Wikipedia alone exceeding 7 million articles).
- Billions of monthly pageviews and access from nearly 2 billion unique devices.
- A vital resource for scholars, researchers, journalists, students, and everyday readers—often serving as the first stop for fact-checking and learning.
The anniversary also underscores ongoing challenges and commitments: maintaining trust amid AI-generated content, addressing perceived biases, combating misinformation, and ensuring sustainability through reader support and infrastructure upgrades.
