IMD Warns Of Cold Wave & Dense Fog Across Delhi-NCR

Delhi experienced its coldest morning of the season as temperatures dropped sharply, intensifying winter conditions across the capital.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for dense fog and warned of a cold wave in Delhi-NCR on Sunday and Monday, cautioning that conditions could worsen over the next two days.

IMD data showed the minimum temperature at Safdarjung fell to 4.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday, marking the coldest January morning in the past three years.

Daytime temperatures also remained below normal, with a maximum of 19.7 degrees Celsius, adding to the city’s winter discomfort.

Other areas recorded similarly low readings, with Palam and Ayanagar at 4.5 degrees Celsius, Lodi Road at 4.7 degrees Celsius, and the Ridge at 5.3 degrees Celsius.

Maximum temperatures across the city ranged from 17.2 degrees Celsius at Palam to around 19 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung and Ayanagar.

The cold wave, coupled with calm winds, has also led to a deterioration in air quality. Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 259 at 8:00 AM on Sunday, remaining in the ‘poor’ category, while Chandni Chowk recorded 395, edging close to the ‘severe’ level.

Official data showed 27 monitoring stations reported ‘very poor’ air quality, while 11 remained in the ‘poor’ category, raising health concerns for residents.

The IMD has advised people to exercise caution, particularly during early morning hours, as cold wave and dense fog conditions persist across Delhi.

Authorities have urged residents to limit outdoor activity, wear warm clothing, and take precautions against pollution as the harsh winter spell continues.
