Prabhas Patan, Gujarat – Somnath Temple is set to host a series of year-long events to commemorate the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, officials confirmed on Monday.

Spiritual and social programmes will take place at the temple from January 8 to 11, culminating with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on January 11 to attend the celebrations.

The Swabhiman Parv marks a millennium since the first major attack on the Somnath Temple in January 1026, celebrating the shrine’s resilience and India’s enduring civilisational spirit.

Invaders repeatedly destroyed the temple, but people rebuilt it time and again, culminating in its restoration in the 1950s as a symbol of national pride and cultural continuity.

‘Unbroken Faith’ as Central Theme

The central theme of the festival is ‘Unbroken Faith’, highlighting Somnath Temple as a beacon of India’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

Prime Minister Modi has described the shrine as ‘the eternal proclamation of the Indian soul’, noting that while hate and fanaticism can destroy momentarily, faith and the power of goodness can create enduring strength.

The Swabhiman Parv also celebrates another milestone: 75 years since the restored temple reopened to devotees in 1951, underscoring the temple’s historical and spiritual significance.

In his recent blog post, PM Modi recounted the temple’s history and resilience, emphasising that foreign invaders repeatedly attacked Somnath with the intent to destroy, not to show devotion.

“There can be no better illustration of India’s indomitable civilisational spirit than Somnath, which continues to stand tall despite immense adversity,” he said.

The Prime Minister initiated the observance of the Swabhiman Parv as a symbol of faith, destruction, and rebuilding, reflecting India’s civilisational strength and the temple’s significance as a unifying spiritual landmark.

The year-long festivities will include a range of spiritual, cultural and social programmes that honour Somnath’s rich history and reinforce its role in shaping India’s cultural identity and national pride.
