Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a landmark cultural and spiritual event in the national capital on January 3, reinforcing India’s civilisational connection with Buddhism and its global outreach.
The Prime Minister will formally open the Grand International Exposition of Sacred Piprahwa Relics related to Bhagwan Buddha at the Rai Pithora Cultural Complex in Delhi, officials confirmed on Thursday.
Titled ‘The Light & the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One,’ the exposition will commence at 11 AM and marks a historic moment in India’s cultural diplomacy.
For the first time, the revered Piprahwa relics, repatriated after more than a century abroad, will be displayed alongside authenticated relics and archaeological artefacts preserved at the National Museum in New Delhi and the Indian Museum in Kolkata.
Discovered in 1898, the Piprahwa relics occupy a foundational place in the archaeology of early Buddhism.
Scholars regard them as among the earliest and most credible relic deposits directly associated with Bhagwan Buddha.
Archaeological findings link the Piprahwa site to ancient Kapilavastu, widely believed to be the place where Buddha spent his formative years before renunciation.
Sacred Heritage Takes Centre-Stage
Officials from the Prime Minister’s Office said the exposition reflects Prime Minister Modi’s consistent emphasis on preserving India’s spiritual heritage and presenting it to the world with authenticity and scholarly depth.
The recent repatriation of these relics, they added, resulted from sustained diplomatic engagement, institutional coordination, and innovative public-private partnerships.
The exhibition follows a carefully curated thematic layout. At its heart stands a reconstructed interpretive model inspired by the iconic Sanchi Stupa, symbolically uniting the repatriated relics with artefacts from India’s national collections.
Surrounding sections explore themes such as Piprahwa Revisited, Vignettes from the Life of Buddha, The Aesthetic Language of Buddhist Teachings, The Global Spread of Buddhist Art and Ideals, and India’s Ongoing Effort to Reclaim Cultural Artefacts.
To deepen public engagement, organisers have integrated advanced audio-visual storytelling tools, including immersive films, digital reconstructions, interpretive projections, and multimedia installations.
These features trace the life of Bhagwan Buddha, the discovery and journey of the Piprahwa relics, and the artistic traditions they inspired across centuries and continents.
Officials said the exposition not only celebrates India’s ancient spiritual inheritance but also positions the country as a global custodian of Buddhist heritage, reinforcing its cultural leadership on the world stage.
