Removing makeup at night is not optional. It is a non-negotiable step that protects skin health, preserves texture, and prevents clogged pores and breakouts.
When makeup lingers overnight, it blocks natural skin repair, dulls the complexion, and weakens the impact of skincare products applied later.
Beauty expert Gayetri Chakravarthy, National Creative Director at Lakme Salon, emphasises that effective makeup removal acts as the foundation of glowing skin.
Her expert-backed approach focuses on gentle techniques that cleanse deeply without stressing the skin, even after long and exhausting days.
Step One: Start with Clean Hands
Begin every cleansing routine by washing your hands thoroughly. Clean hands stop bacteria, excess oil, and environmental dirt from transferring onto the face. This simple habit reduces irritation and ensures your cleanser works efficiently on the skin rather than battling surface contaminants.
Step Two: Use the Right Makeup Remover
Always reach for a dedicated makeup remover before using a face wash. A proper remover breaks down makeup, sunscreen, and pollution particles far more effectively.
Chakravarthy warns that makeup wipes often smear residue across the skin and leave behind pore-clogging films. Use them only in emergencies, never as a daily solution.
Choose your remover according to your skin’s needs. Micellar water gently lifts impurities and suits sensitive or acne-prone skin. Oil cleansers dissolve stubborn and waterproof makeup by attracting oil-based residue. Cream or milk cleansers hydrate dry or mature skin. Balm cleansers melt heavy makeup with minimal effort.
Massage the remover into your skin for at least one minute. This action breaks down makeup thoroughly and boosts circulation, instantly reviving dull skin.
Step Three: Handle Eyes and Lips Carefully
Eye makeup demands patience. Mascara and eyeliner cling tightly and require a specialised eye makeup remover. Gently press and wipe instead of scrubbing to prevent fine lines and lash damage.
For long-lasting lip products, apply a small amount of oil-based remover. Let it loosen the pigment before wiping softly.
Step Four: Double Cleanse for Total Purity
After removing makeup, cleanse again using a gentle water-based face wash. This second cleanse removes leftover residue and prepares the skin for toners, serums, and moisturisers. Always use lukewarm water to protect natural oils.
Step Five: Hydrate and Seal
Pat your skin dry using a soft towel. Apply toner to balance pH, follow with targeted serums, and seal hydration with a moisturiser.
This expert-approved routine ensures clearer skin, enhanced glow, and maximum skincare benefits. Proper makeup removal does not just clean the skin; it strengthens it.
