Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday lauded the release of the Constitution of India in the Santhali language, describing the initiative as a ‘commendable effort’ that will strengthen understanding of democratic rights and duties among tribal populations.
Responding to a post by President Droupadi Murmu on X, PM Modi stated, “A commendable effort! The Constitution in Santhali language will help deepen constitutional awareness and democratic participation. India is very proud of the Santhali culture and the contribution of Santhali people to national progress.”

Constitution Released at Rashtrapati Bhavan
The remarks came after President Murmu formally released the Constitution in Santhali, written in the Ol Chiki script, at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday. She highlighted that the publication enables tribal communities to read and comprehend the Constitution in their mother tongue, fostering greater inclusivity and democratic engagement.
President Murmu noted that this year also marks the centenary of the Ol Chiki script, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Santhali people.
She praised the Union Ministry of Law and Justice and its team for completing the translation during this milestone year, ensuring the rights, responsibilities, and values enshrined in the Constitution are more accessible.
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal attended the event, which President Murmu described as a moment of pride and joy for the Santhali community.
Millions of tribal citizens across Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar, who speak the Santhali language, recognised under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution via the 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2003, benefit from this significant development.
President Murmu further emphasised that translating the Constitution into indigenous languages bridges the gap between citizens and the democratic framework, promoting awareness, participation, and empowerment.
She expressed delight that the Santhali community can now engage with the nation’s foundational document in their own language, strengthening both cultural identity and democratic values.
