Himachal Pradesh has instructed pharmaceutical companies to immediately recall 47 batches of medicines after they did not meet quality standards, officials confirmed on December 20, 2025.
Authorities have sent formal notices directing manufacturers to remove the affected stock from the market without delay.
“Out of 200 medicine samples tested nationwide, 47 were manufactured in the State. These include medications for fever, heart attacks, and diabetes. The failed samples originated from various districts: 28 from Solan, 18 from Sirmaur, and one from Una. Notices have been issued to the respective companies,” officials said on Saturday.
The affected medicines include Paracetamol for fever, Clopidogrel and Aspirin for heart conditions, Metformin for diabetes, Ramipril for heart ailments, Sodium Valproate for epilepsy, and Mebeverine Hydrochloride for muscle spasms, among others that failed to meet safety standards.
“Explanations have been sought, and actions will be taken against the companies in accordance with regulations,” State Drug Controller Manish Kapoor informed media personnel in Solan.
Testing and Regulatory Oversight
In November 2025, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) collected 65 samples, while the Himachal Pradesh State Drug Controller tested 135. Out of these, 47 were confirmed substandard, prompting immediate recall and further scrutiny.
Himachal Pradesh has faced repeated issues with medicines produced locally failing quality tests. Earlier this year, Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandil warned that companies with recurrent violations could be blacklisted.
Moreover, a central regulator alert in March 2025 had highlighted 38 drug samples from the state that failed to meet standards.
Officials emphasise that public safety remains the top priority, and strict measures will continue against non-compliant pharmaceutical companies. The current recall aims to prevent unsafe medicines from reaching patients while reinforcing adherence to national drug quality regulations.
The state government has urged manufacturers to implement corrective measures immediately and to comply fully with recall instructions.
Regular testing and monitoring will continue to ensure that medicines produced in Himachal Pradesh adhere to the highest quality standards. This measure will help protect public health.
