Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday transformed a ceremonial moment into a powerful civilisational statement as he dedicated the Order of Oman, the Sultanate’s highest civilian honour, to the people of India and Oman and to the ancestors who forged maritime bonds across the Arabian Sea centuries ago.
Receiving the award in Muscat, PM Modi framed the honour not as a personal accolade, but as a tribute to enduring trust, shared history, and living partnership between two ancient nations.
Sultan Haitham bin Tarik conferred the First Class of the Order of Oman on the Indian Prime Minister in recognition of his exceptional contribution to strengthening India-Oman relations and his global leadership.
Instituted in 1970 by Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the award places PM Modi among a rare league of world leaders such as Queen Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela, Emperor Akihito, Queen Máxima, and King Abdullah of Jordan. This recognition marks PM Modi’s 29th international honour, underlining India’s growing diplomatic stature.
PM Modi responded with symbolism and substance.
In a message posted on X, he expressed gratitude to the Sultan, the Omani government, and its people, calling the honour ‘a symbol of affection and trust’ between the citizens of both countries.
He went further, evoking history to anchor modern diplomacy.
PM Modi recalled how traders and seafarers travelled from Mandvi in Gujarat to Muscat, building economic and cultural links long before modern nation-states emerged. He dedicated the honour to those ancestors and to generations of sailors whose exchanges powered mutual prosperity.

The Prime Minister’s words reframed bilateral ties as a living continuum rather than a transactional partnership. He described the Arabian Sea not as a divider but as a bridge that has connected India and Oman through trade, culture, and shared destiny.
That civilisational framing resonated strongly as the visit coincided with 70 years of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The timing also carried strategic weight. PM Modi’s visit followed Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s state visit to India in December 2023, reflecting sustained high-level political engagement.
India and Oman today share a comprehensive strategic partnership spanning energy security, maritime cooperation, defence, trade, and regional stability in the Gulf.
Officials noted that the conferment of the Order of Oman during this milestone year added depth to the partnership and reinforced long-term alignment.
Oman remains one of India’s most trusted partners in West Asia, particularly in securing sea lanes, energy flows, and regional balance.
By dedicating the honour to history, people, and shared memory, PM Modi turned diplomacy into narrative power.
