Political Journey and Leadership
Haradanahalli Deve Gowda Kumaraswamy is a senior politician and a key figure in the Janata Dal (Secular).
He has previously served as the 18th Chief Minister of Karnataka and currently holds the Union portfolios of Heavy Industries and Steel.
Kumaraswamy is also a sitting Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Channapatna, a seat he secured in the 2023 state elections. He is the son of HD Deve Gowda, former Prime Minister of India and former Chief Minister of Karnataka, and has been an influential presence in both state and national politics for decades.
He began his political career in the 1996 General Elections, winning the Kanakapura Parliamentary constituency.
Kumaraswamy faced setbacks in the 1998 Lok Sabha and 1999 Assembly elections, but he improved his fortunes in 2004 by winning the Ramanagara Assembly seat during a coalition government between JD(S) and Congress.
Kumaraswamy first assumed office as Chief Minister of Karnataka in February 2006 under a 20-month power-sharing agreement with the BJP, serving until October 2007. He returned to the post in May 2018 with Congress’s support but resigned in July 2019 after the coalition collapsed.
In the 2023 Assembly elections, Kumaraswamy won from Channapatna and later secured the Mandya Lok Sabha seat, leading to his induction into the Modi 3.0 Cabinet.
Today, as Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel, he plays a vital role in driving India’s industrial self-reliance and strengthening the country’s manufacturing capabilities.
