India has delivered a major humanitarian consignment to Peru, handing over 250,000 bottles of saline solution to support patients suffering from dehydration and reaffirming its commitment to cooperation with countries of the Global South.
Indian Ambassador to Peru Vishvas Sapkal formally presented the medical supplies to Peru’s Ministry of Health on Friday, marking another milestone in the growing health partnership between the two nations.
The donation forms part of a broader 32-tonne humanitarian shipment sent by India to assist Peru’s healthcare system.
Senior Peruvian officials expressed appreciation for the timely support. Those present included Alberto Tejada Conroy, Director General for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Health; Eric Vasquez Calderon, Joint Director at the National Centre for the Supply of Strategic Health Resources (CENARES); and Abel Cardenas from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
They highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing public health challenges.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the initiative as a reflection of solidarity among Global South partners. In a social media post, the ministry said the saline consignment would directly aid patients battling dehydration across Peru.
Expanding health and development cooperation
India and Peru share a long-standing and cordial relationship, underpinned by cooperation across sectors such as healthcare and pharmaceuticals, energy, mining, textiles, agriculture, science and technology, defence, space, and capacity building.
The two countries also work closely on multilateral platforms, according to the MEA.
This is not the first instance of India extending health assistance to Peru. In 2023, New Delhi supplied 1,000 vials of human immunoglobulin to help address a surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome cases in the country.
India has consistently positioned itself as a dependable humanitarian partner for developing nations. Last month, it dispatched 10,000 doses of rabies vaccine and 2,000 vials of rabies immunoglobulin to Timor-Leste to help contain an outbreak.
The MEA has reiterated India’s intention to act as a reliable ‘first responder’ during health emergencies across the Global South, underlining its commitment to shared resilience and people-centric diplomacy.
