President Murmu To Lead NHRC’s Human Rights Day Programme; Focus On ‘Dignity Through Essential Services’

President Droupadi Murmu will lead the NHRC’s Human Rights Day event on Wednesday and will share her reflections on ensuring dignity and equal opportunities for all.

Her address will emphasise the need for accountable governance and effective public service delivery. It will focus on ensuring justice, equality, and basic amenities for every citizen, according to an official statement.

NHRC Chairperson Justice V Ramasubramanian and PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, will also attend the event.

In line with the United Nations’ theme for this year’s Human Rights Day, ‘Everyday Essentials’, the NHRC will host a national conference titled ‘Ensuring Everyday Essentials: Public Services and Dignity for All’. Mishra is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.

The Commission noted that the theme reflects India’s evolving development landscape. It stressed that human rights are not theoretical ideals but practical necessities that shape daily living.

These essentials include healthcare, housing, education, financial inclusion, justice and social protection, services that collectively define the quality of life.

Highlighting India’s Progress and Persistent Gaps

The NHRC emphasised that recent government initiatives, including PM Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission, Ayushman Bharat, Ujjwala Yojana, Jan Aushadhi Kendras, the National Education Policy, and the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme, have significantly improved access to essential services.

However, the Commission urged authorities to continuously ensure inclusiveness, awareness, and accountability so that no citizen is left behind.

The conference includes two thematic sessions: ‘Basic Amenities for All: A Human Rights Approach’ and ‘Ensuring Public Services and Dignity for All’.

Senior government officials and subject experts will discuss gaps, solutions and best practices to strengthen delivery mechanisms and uphold constitutional values.

Human Rights Day, observed globally on 10 December, marks the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This foundational document recognises the inherent rights and dignity of every individual.
