Indian stock markets opened sharply lower on Tuesday as investors engaged in profit booking following recent gains.

Market sentiment further weakened amid reports that US President Donald Trump may consider imposing fresh tariffs on Indian rice, raising concerns over unresolved trade issues between Washington and New Delhi.

The BSE Sensex fell 380 points, or 0.45 per cent, to 84,723 in early trade, while the Nifty 50 dropped 124 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 25,837.

Key Technical Levels for Nifty

Market analysts noted that the Nifty now finds immediate support in the 25,800–25,850 range, while resistance is observed around 26,100–26,150.

They highlighted that a decisive breakout above this zone is essential for the index to regain upward momentum, while a sustained dip below support could prolong the ongoing consolidation phase.

The bearish trend was evident among heavyweight stocks on the Sensex.

Asian Paints, Tech Mahindra, Trent, Reliance Industries, TCS, Ultratech Cement, Tata Steel, M&M, Tata Motors PV, HCL Tech, and BEL were among the top laggards, registering losses of up to 2.5 per cent.

In contrast, Hindustan Unilever and Bharti Airtel managed to remain in positive territory on the 30-share index.

Weakness extended across the broader market. The Nifty MidCap index fell 0.64 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index was down 0.61 per cent.

Sectoral indices saw the Nifty IT and Metal indices among the biggest losers, slipping 0.9 per cent and 0.8 per cent, respectively.

The Nifty Auto index also declined 0.8 per cent, and the Realty index dropped 0.6 per cent.

Analysts attributed the cautious tone to renewed global trade uncertainties, prompting investors to trim positions and await further clarity.

The combination of profit booking and external trade worries kept market participants on the sidelines in early trading.
