Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Congress in the Lok Sabha while marking 150 years of Vande Mataram. He accused the party of betraying the national song by aligning with Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s objections during the pre-Independence era.
PM Modi said Jawaharlal Nehru followed Jinnah’s stance in 1937 by claiming Vande Mataram could ‘irritate Muslims’. He argued that this decision compromised the hymn’s legacy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi linked this alleged appeasement to later political choices. He asserted that Congress diluted Vande Mataram. He said the party also planted early seeds of division that still shape Indian politics today.
PM Modi reminded the House that the BJP had highlighted these concerns before the discussion began. He accused Congress of yielding to Muslim League pressure during its 1937 session.
The Prime Minister intensified the attack by connecting the song’s history to what he called Congress’s pattern of ‘repeated betrayals’. He noted that when the country marked the 100th anniversary of the hymn, India was under the Emergency.
Hymn’s History Sparks Political Fire
PM Modi said the government at that time strangled the Constitution and jailed those who stood for democratic freedoms and patriotism.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Vande Mataram as a timeless rallying cry. He said the hymn inspired countless freedom fighters during the independence struggle.
He highlighted Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s composition from November 1875 as a powerful expression of sacrifice, unity, and national resolve.
According to him, the 150-year milestone offers the nation a crucial chance to restore the hymn’s full glory.
PM Modi highlighted the commemoration alongside major national milestones. He cited the 75 years of the Constitution, the 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Patel and Birsa Munda, and the 350th martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur.
PM Modi said these events strengthen India’s democratic and cultural memory.
He called Vande Mataram a ‘mantra of sacrifice, unity and resilience’. He urged Parliament to preserve its legacy for future generations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed that honouring the hymn is not only a tribute to history but also a reaffirmation of India’s democratic spirit.
