Indian Railways Accelerates Safety Overhaul With Major Bridge Upgrades Across The Network

Indian Railways reports extensive upgrades to more than 8,000 bridges since 2022, highlighting a nationwide push to strengthen infrastructure and boost safety.

Indian Railways has undertaken a significant safety overhaul, repairing, strengthening or rebuilding more than 8,000 bridges between 2022 and October 2025.

The update was shared in Parliament, marking one of the most extensive infrastructure initiatives in recent years.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined the progress of ongoing works aimed at modernising critical structures across the national railway network. He emphasised that a systematic monitoring mechanism guided the upgrades.

The minister highlighted that Indian Railways relies on a digital Bridge Management System (BMS). The system records the design, construction, inspection and maintenance history of every bridge in the country.

He said that maintenance and rehabilitation activities are carried out based on real-time monitoring through this system.

According to the minister, 8,039 bridges have undergone repairs, rehabilitation, strengthening or complete rebuilding during the 2022–2025 period. This reflects the railways’ strong focus on enhancing structural resilience.

Mandatory Inspections Strengthened for Safety

Inspectors conduct two compulsory checks on all bridges every year: a pre-monsoon review followed by a detailed post-monsoon assessment.

Engineers assign numerical ratings to the physical condition of each bridge during these evaluations, enabling them to prioritise vulnerable structures.

Officials monitor bridges with lower ratings more frequently. The minister noted that engineers conduct specialised technical audits wherever necessary to address high-risk conditions promptly.

Subways and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) are also inspected before and after monsoon seasons.

To mitigate waterlogging, one of the most persistent challenges during heavy rain, the Railways has introduced several measures.

These include enhanced drainage systems, sealing of joints, installation of cross-drains and humps, and deployment of high-capacity pumps at vulnerable locations.

The comprehensive initiative reflects the Railways’ commitment to improving passenger safety and strengthening infrastructure as part of its ongoing modernisation agenda.
