Indian Railways has announced that 37 trains across the country have been equipped with 116 extra coaches, covering 114 additional trips, in response to the recent surge in rail travellers following widespread flight cancellations linked to the ongoing IndiGo situation.
Southern Railway has taken the lead by increasing capacity on 18 trains, deploying extra Sleeper and Chair Car coaches on routes experiencing high passenger demand.
The government confirmed that these enhancements have been in effect since 6 December, providing a major boost to travel capacity in the southern region.
“Northern Railway (NR) follows with augmentations on eight trains, adding 3AC and Chair Car coaches. These measures implemented today onwards enhance availability on heavily travelled northern corridors,” it stated.
Western Railway has strengthened four popular services by attaching additional 2AC and 3AC coaches.
These measures address increased movement between Western states and Delhi.
East Central Railway has increased capacity on the Rajendra Nagar–New Delhi service (12309) for five trips between 6–10 December 2025, improving options for passengers travelling between Bihar and the capital.
East Coast Railway has added 2AC coaches to trains running between Bhubaneswar and New Delhi (20817/20811/20823) over five trips, supporting travel demand from Odisha.
In the eastern region, Eastern Railway has provided more Sleeper Class accommodation on three trains for six trips on 7–8 December 2025 due to rising inter-state travel.
Meanwhile, Northeast Frontier Railway has enhanced two key trains with extra Sleeper and 3AC coaches over eight trips each between 6–13 December 2025 to assist passengers in the Northeast.
Special Trains for Passenger Convenience
Along with this expansion of capacity, Indian Railways is also operating four special trains for public convenience.
The Gorakhpur–Anand Vihar Terminal–Gorakhpur Special (05591/05592) will run four trips from 7–9 December 2025, while the New Delhi–Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan–New Delhi Reserved Vande Bharat Special (02439/02440) has operated on 6 December for faster travel to the Jammu region.
In western India, the New Delhi–Mumbai Central–New Delhi Reserved Superfast Special (04002/04001) is running on 6 and 7 December.
Additionally, the Hazrat Nizamuddin–Thiruvananthapuram Central Reserved Superfast Special (04080), scheduled for a one-way service on 6 December.
