Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced the creation of a new trilateral cooperation mechanism, the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership, during a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.
PM Modi described the discussions as ‘excellent’, noting that the initiative reflects the shared commitment of three democracies seeking to collaborate across continents and oceans.
The ACITI Partnership is designed to deepen collaboration in emerging technologies while broadening global supply-chain resilience.
PM Modi said the initiative would enhance cooperation in advanced technological domains, support diversification in critical sectors and expand joint efforts in clean-energy solutions.
A key focus of the framework will be the mass adoption of artificial intelligence, which all three nations view as central to future economic growth.
PM Modi highlighted that the partnership would help the countries work collectively to create secure, sustainable and innovative ecosystems. He added that the grouping would enable closer coordination on innovation-driven solutions, particularly in areas linked to digital transformation and next-generation technologies.
Focus on Clean Energy and AI Expansion
The trilateral arrangement also aims to accelerate the transition towards cleaner energy sources. By linking technological expertise with shared climate goals, the three nations intend to reduce dependency on vulnerable supply chains and promote eco-friendly growth models.
Strengthening AI adoption will remain a core component, with emphasis on responsible development and deployment.
PM Modi expressed confidence that the partnership would contribute meaningfully to shaping a secure and technology-forward future, stating that the three democracies “look forward to working together to guarantee a better future for the coming generations”.
The announcement followed PM Modi’s call for a fresh global development model during the summit’s opening session, where he proposed initiatives including a G20 mechanism to counter the drug–terror nexus and a Global Healthcare Response Team.
Earlier in the day, he also met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, describing his conversation with the UN chief as ‘very productive’.
With the ACITI Partnership now formalised, India has signalled a renewed push to strengthen collaborative innovation networks and enhance global technological governance.
