PIB Fact Check warns citizens about a deepfake video falsely attributed to Lt Gen KJS Dhillon, urging the public to stay vigilant and avoid spreading AI-generated misinformation targeting national institutions.

Government Warns Against Deepfake Video Targeting Senior Army Veterans

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a strong advisory after a digitally altered video featuring Lt Gen (Retd) KJS Dhillon began circulating across social media platforms.

The clip, shared by Pakistani propaganda accounts, falsely claims that Lt Gen VK Singh criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the recent Tejas aircraft crash at the Dubai Air Show.

PIB’s Fact Check unit confirmed that malicious actors fabricated the video using AI to mislead the public and erode trust in the Indian Armed Forces. The organisation emphasised that Lt Gen Dhillon never made such remarks.

To ensure complete transparency, PIB shared the original, unedited video, urging citizens to verify information through authenticated sources.

The agency highlighted that malicious actors are increasingly using deepfake technology to manipulate visuals and voices, making misinformation harder to detect.

In its advisory, PIB cautioned that such AI-generated fabrications aim to create confusion, foster distrust, and weaken public confidence in national institutions.

The public has been urged to remain vigilant and refrain from forwarding misleading content.

Appeal for Public Caution Amid Rising Deepfake Threats

The government reiterated its warning about the growing threat posed by deepfakes, a tool often exploited to distort narratives related to national security and public figures.

It stressed the need for digital literacy and responsible sharing, particularly when dealing with sensitive subjects or unverifiable claims.

PIB encouraged citizens to rely solely on official channels for updates and fact-checks, reminding them that misinformation can have far-reaching consequences, including social unrest and damage to national cohesion.

“Stay alert. Do not forward such fake content. For verified updates, always rely on official sources,” the advisory stated, underscoring the importance of cross-checking information before circulating it further.
