Olympic silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has revealed how Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swift action before the Tokyo Olympics became a turning point in her career. She credited his prompt approval of her request for overseas training as crucial to her recovery and medal-winning performance.
Speaking in a video shared by the Modi Story handle on X, Chanu recalled that months before the 2020 Games, she suffered an injury while India was under pandemic restrictions. “Before the Tokyo Olympics, it was difficult for us to train during the lockdown. So, we requested permission to go to the US for treatment and training,” she said.

Chanu explained that her team requested the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and her sports federation. “Within a day, the Prime Minister approved our request and sent me to the US to train for the Olympics,” she said, adding that this quick decision reflected his deep commitment to Indian athletes.
She noted that the approval came at a critical time. “I had told them that I wanted to win a medal for India, but I needed proper training for it. The Prime Minister’s support made that possible,” Chanu said.
“His Encouragement Inspires Every Athlete”
After months of rehabilitation and focused training in the US, Chanu returned stronger and went on to win a silver medal for India on the opening day of the Tokyo Games. “I feel blessed that I got the chance to work hard and make India proud,” she said.
Following her victory, Prime Minister Modi congratulated her personally. “Every athlete dreams of winning an Olympic medal and receiving such encouragement. The Prime Minister’s appreciation motivates us to perform better,” Chanu added.
Chanu further shared that Modi regularly interacts with athletes, offering suggestions and encouragement. “He takes a genuine interest in our progress. His words push us to overcome weaknesses and aim higher,” she said, describing his role as one that nurtures India’s sporting spirit.
