On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined his government’s dedication to strengthening Mumbai’s infrastructure and improving everyday life. He will likely inaugurate Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and the Mumbai Metro Line-3.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “On the way to Navi Mumbai to take part in the programme marking the inauguration of Phase-1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport. With this, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will get its second major international airport, thus boosting commerce and connectivity.”
He also announced the inauguration of the final phase of the Mumbai Metro Line-3, reaffirming his government’s commitment to improving Mumbai’s infrastructure and enhancing the city’s Ease of Living.

The Prime Minister will inaugurate the first phase of NMIA, built at an estimated cost of Rs 19,650 crore, to advance his vision of making India a global aviation hub.
NMIA is the country’s largest Greenfield airport project, developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
Navi Mumbai International Airport will become the region’s second international airport. Working with CSMIA, it will help decongest air traffic. The move places Mumbai in the league of global cities with multiple airports.
Designed for maximum efficiency, NMIA stretches across 1,160 hectares. It is set to handle 90 million passengers annually. Cargo capacity is projected to reach 3.25 million metric tonnes.
Additionally, one of the key features of the airport is its Automated People Mover (APM), linking all four terminals to enable seamless transfers between them.
A separate landside APM will connect city-side facilities, improving accessibility for both passengers and staff.
The airport also incorporates extensive sustainability measures, including:
- Facilities for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) storage,
- Solar power generation of nearly 47 MW, and
- The use of electric buses for local travel
Notably, NMIA will become India’s first airport to offer a Water Taxi service.
Alongside the airport inauguration, the Prime Minister will also open Phase 2B of the Mumbai Metro Line-3. This stretch extends from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade and costs an estimated Rs 12,200 crore to build.
This will, however, mark the formal dedication of the entire Mumbai Metro Line-3 (Aqua Line) to the nation.
With a total expenditure of over Rs 37,270 crore, the completion of this line, however, represents a significant step forward in the city’s transport network.
Mumbai Metro Line-3, the city’s first fully underground metro corridor, will likely transform daily travel in the region by offering faster, more sustainable, and reliable transport options to millions of commuters.
