Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) today, showcasing one of India’s most modern, technologically advanced, and environmentally conscious airports.
Developed over 1,160 hectares at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, NMIA represents a significant leap in the nation’s aviation infrastructure and economic growth.
The airport’s Phase One is ready for operation, with domestic flights expected to begin in December 2025, followed by international services two months later.
The airport features two parallel runways, and the construction of the first is now complete. Its design focuses on passenger convenience, offering direct metro check-in and baggage handling through the ‘One-Up End-to-End Baggage Facility’ app.
The integrated terminal complex will connect all terminals seamlessly, enabling smoother passenger flow.
With parking for 350 aircraft and dedicated taxiways for each runway, NMIA will dramatically enhance air traffic capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Sustainability and Technology
True to its commitment to sustainability, NMIA incorporates green energy, rainwater harvesting, and water conservation systems.
The terminal design blends modernity with heritage, showcasing Indian art and culture through immersive digital displays.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) will power multiple operational systems, improving safety, efficiency, and passenger experience.
To improve accessibility, a new link road from Atal Setu to Kosthal Road is under construction, while Metro Line 8, connecting Navi Mumbai and Mumbai airports, awaits final approval.
In addition, a water taxi service is set to launch soon, further strengthening multimodal connectivity.
Once fully operational, NMIA will handle 90 million passengers annually and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo. Phase One alone will manage 20 million passengers and 0.5 million tonnes of cargo each year.
The airport is operated by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), a joint venture between Mumbai International Airport Ltd (74%) and CIDCO (26%).
The Director General of Civil Aviation granted NMIA its Aerodrome Licence on 30 September.
Together with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), NMIA forms a multi-airport system with a combined ultimate capacity of 150 million passengers per year.
The inauguration of NMIA not only promises to ease congestion at CSMIA but also positions Mumbai among the world’s leading multi-airport aviation hubs, symbolising India’s progressive growth and infrastructure excellence.
