In a landmark announcement, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh confirmed that work has officially begun on ‘Sudarshan Chakra’, India’s indigenous version of the Iron Dome.
Speaking at a press briefing in New Delhi, he described the project as a decisive step towards strategic autonomy in defence.
“We have already put our heads together with DRDO and started developing a system with our own Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) at its core,” the Air Chief said, emphasising the need for self-reliance in defence technology.
The Sudarshan Chakra will form a multi-layered air defence system that detects, intercepts, and neutralises aerial threats such as missiles, drones, and enemy aircraft.
Modelled on Israel’s Iron Dome, India will tailor the system to its strategic and geographical needs, providing customised protection across diverse terrains.
Relevance of Air Power in Modern Warfare
Highlighting the growing significance of air power, the Air Chief referred to Operation Sindoor as a turning point. “The relevance of air power has come to the forefront after Operation Sindoor,” he said.
While details of the operation remain classified, defence experts believe it showcased India’s ability for rapid deployment and precision strikes in a sensitive border environment.
Air Chief Marshal Singh underlined that India can no longer depend on foreign technologies, calling for accelerated indigenous development.
“There is an urgent need for Aatmanirbharta; we cannot remain dependent,” he stated, adding that home-grown innovation is essential for maintaining strategic independence.
He also cautioned that future wars will be unlike past conflicts, demanding a future-ready force equipped with artificial intelligence, unmanned systems, and cyber warfare tools.
The Sudarshan Chakra initiative will see collaboration between the Indian Air Force, DRDO, and private defence manufacturers.
The project forms part of the IAF’s broader modernisation drive, aimed at building a robust indigenous defence ecosystem.
Once operational, Sudarshan Chakra is expected to transform India’s air defence capabilities, ensuring comprehensive protection and advancing the country’s vision of a self-reliant and technologically advanced military.
