Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his last respects to Vijay Kumar Malhotra, a senior BJP leader whose political career spanned several decades.
Malhotra, born in December 1931 in Lahore, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 93.
PM Modi visited his residence in New Delhi to offer condolences to the family, reflecting on Malhotra’s longstanding contribution to the party and public life.
The funeral proceedings were attended by BJP national chief JP Nadda, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and numerous senior party leaders.
PM Modi also described Malhotra as an ‘outstanding leader’ with a profound understanding of people’s issues.
On X, he expressed, “Shri Vijay Kumar Malhotra Ji distinguished himself as an outstanding leader, who had a very good understanding of people’s issues. He played a vital role in strengthening our Party in Delhi. He is also remembered for his Parliamentary interventions. Pained by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

A Storied Political Career
Vijay Kumar Malhotra served as a five-time Member of Parliament and two-time Member of the Legislative Assembly from Delhi.
He held the position of President of the Delhi Pradesh Jana Sangh from 1972 to 1975 and twice served as President of the BJP Delhi Pradesh (1977–80 and 1980–84).
Moreover, in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he was the only BJP candidate to secure a seat in Delhi, underscoring his enduring political influence.
Malhotra’s political journey included close collaboration with stalwarts like Kedar Nath Sahni and Madan Lal Khurana.
The Delhi BJP credits him with sustaining the party’s operations and presence in the capital over several decades.
Furthermore, among his notable victories was his overwhelming win against former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the 1999 general elections, a testament to his strong electoral appeal.
For over 45 years, Malhotra remained a prominent figure in Delhi’s political landscape.
His work in nurturing the BJP in the city, his parliamentary contributions, and his commitment to public service cemented his legacy as one of the most senior and respected leaders in Delhi.
The Delhi BJP also noted that his decades-long dedication ensured that the party maintained a significant foothold in the capital.
After the Prime Minister’s visit, party members and supporters will offer their final respects at the Delhi BJP office, where they will receive Vijay Malhotra’s mortal remains.
