A lawyer faces criminal contempt proceedings after allegedly making serious accusations of corruption against the judiciary and judges.
Justice Amit Mahajan of the Delhi High Court has initiated action against the lawyer for sending emails that the court found insulting and disrespectful.
Delhi High Court Observes Contempt of Court
In its order, the High Court stated that, at first glance, the lawyer’s conduct falls within the scope of criminal contempt under Section 2(c) of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971. The court has scheduled the next hearing for 19 November, directing the lawyer to appear in court.
The High Court noted that the lawyer’s allegations were baseless, reprehensible, and tarnished the dignity of the judiciary. It emphasised that such claims undermine the authority and credibility of the court and interfere with judicial processes and the administration of justice.
According to the emails sent by the lawyer, he accused the judiciary of judicial terrorism, judicial emergency, judicial corruption, and judicial collusion. He also demanded the introduction of a judicial accountability bill, claiming that corruption in the judiciary caused him to lose ten valuable years of his life.
The case dates back to 2023, when action against the lawyer for contempt was first sought. In December 2023, the lawyer apologised in court and assured that he would not repeat such conduct. However, in 2024, he allegedly repeated similar actions, prompting the court to issue a notice for contempt proceedings against him.
