US President Donald Trump has publicly called on Microsoft to remove its Head of Global Affairs, Lisa Monaco, accusing her of being ‘corrupt’, ‘deranged’, and ‘a menace to US national security’.
Writing on his Truth Social account, Trump argued that Monaco’s senior role at Microsoft, a company that handles extensive government contracts, gives her access to sensitive information, which, he claimed, she is unfit to manage.
Trump added that he has already revoked Monaco’s security clearances and barred her from entering federal buildings.
According to a report by ‘The Verge’, “After successfully manipulating Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and eventually failing to cancel Jimmy Kimmel, President Donald Trump has named his next target for retribution: Microsoft head of global affairs Lisa Monaco.”
Monaco’s Background in Public Service
Monaco joined Microsoft in May to lead its global government relations, following a long career in public service.
She previously served as the 39th Deputy Attorney General during the administration of former US President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland, a background which the report suggested is a key factor in Trump’s criticism of her.
The exact reason for Trump’s timing remains unclear, but the report speculated that he may have only recently become aware of Monaco’s position at Microsoft.
The Verge also noted that Microsoft has not previously been a major focus of Trump’s attacks, but the company recently scaled back its involvement with the Israeli military’s surveillance operations in Palestinian territories.
Separately, major US technology firms, including Microsoft, have expressed discontent over the new H-1B visa regulations.
Earlier this month, Microsoft advised employees on H-1B and H-4 visas who are currently abroad to return to the US ahead of the 21 September deadline, when the Trump administration’s new $1,00,000 visa fee will take effect.
