Four-time Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, on Wednesday wished Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 75th birthday.
Taking to X, he posted, “Wishing Prime Minister @narendramodi a very happy birthday. May the year ahead be filled with good health, happiness, and continued success in the service of the nation.”

Tharoor’s gesture drew attention within political circles, as his earlier remarks praising the Prime Minister had already sparked criticism from his own party colleagues.
Earlier this year, Tharoor had called PM Modi ‘undoubtedly the most dominant political figure in the country’, adding that the Prime Minister’s personal appeal remained strong among large sections of the electorate.
Several Congress leaders criticised the comment, questioning its timing and political implications.
Tharoor defended his statement, clarifying that acknowledging political realities did not mean endorsing government policies. He stressed that political disagreements should not prevent leaders from showing personal civility.
Operation Sindoor and Internal Party Tensions
The Congress leader further irked his party when the Central government named him to lead an all-party parliamentary delegation to the US and other countries under Operation Sindoor after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Although the Congress did not nominate him, Tharoor still went ahead with the mission. His participation highlighted underlying tensions within the party over his independent approach.
Birthday Greetings Across the Political Spectrum
PM Modi’s 75th birthday saw wishes pouring in from leaders across parties. The BJP marked the occasion with welfare drives, health camps, and public outreach programmes nationwide.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also extended greetings despite sharp ideological differences.
Posting on X, Vijayan wrote: “Warm birthday wishes to Hon’ble PM @narendramodi. Wishing you good health and happiness.”
