Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Gyan Bharatam Portal on Friday, marking a significant step in preserving and promoting India’s ancient manuscript tradition.
The launch will take place during a major international conference focused on reviving the country’s traditional knowledge systems.
The three-day conference, which commenced on Thursday, is being held under the theme: ‘Reclaiming India’s Knowledge Legacy through Manuscript Heritage.’
It has brought together renowned scholars, technologists, conservationists, and policymakers to deliberate on ways to safeguard India’s vast and historically significant manuscript collection.
An official statement says the Gyan Bharatam Portal offers a comprehensive digital platform to digitise, preserve, and provide open access to ancient Indian manuscripts.
The initiative aims to make India’s textual heritage globally accessible and to promote scholarly research by offering a centralised repository of digitised materials.
A Confluence of Scholarship and Innovation
The conference features an exhibition of rare manuscripts, alongside academic sessions exploring key areas such as manuscript conservation, advanced digitisation techniques, legal frameworks, metadata standards, decipherment of ancient scripts, and the role of cultural diplomacy in global heritage promotion.
The event is part of a larger movement to restore India’s position as a hub of traditional knowledge and wisdom.
By leveraging digital tools and international collaboration, the initiative, however, seeks to bring India’s manuscript legacy into the 21st century.
PM Modi’s involvement underscores his long-standing commitment to reviving India’s intellectual and spiritual traditions.
On World Sanskrit Day (9 August), the Prime Minister emphasised the timeless relevance of Sanskrit in preserving ancient knowledge systems.
Taking to X, he posted, “Today, on Shravan Poornima, we mark World Sanskrit Day. Sanskrit is a timeless source of knowledge and expression. Its impact can be found across sectors. This day is an occasion to appreciate the effort of every person around the world who is learning and popularising Sanskrit.”

In another message, PM Modi highlighted the government’s sustained efforts over the past decade to support Sanskrit, including the establishment of Central Sanskrit Universities, Sanskrit Learning Centres, and the Gyan Bharatam Mission, which aims to digitise India’s manuscript wealth for future generations.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also praised Sanskrit on social media, calling it ‘the expression of India’s soul’ and urging citizens to incorporate the language into daily life.
Through the launch of the Gyan Bharatam Portal, PM Modi seeks to position India’s manuscript legacy at the centre of global knowledge discourse.
This digital initiative not only preserves ancient wisdom but also ensures that India’s cultural and intellectual treasures are accessible to scholars and enthusiasts worldwide.
