PM Modi Greets Norway’s Jonas Gahr Store On Electoral Win; Commits To Stronger Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended heartfelt congratulations to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store on his recent re-election victory.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Congratulations to Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on his re-election. I look forward to continue working closely together to further strengthen the India-Norway partnership in all areas.”

PM Modi’s message signals India’s continued interest in building robust ties with the Nordic nations as it pursues global collaboration in climate action, sustainable trade, and regional development.

Norway’s Election Outcome

Jonas Gahr Store, who leads Norway’s Labour Party, secured another term after his centre-left coalition won a narrow majority in the country’s general election held on Monday.

The five-party bloc secured 87 out of 169 seats in parliament, while the centre-right opposition alliance claimed 82 seats.

Despite a notable surge in support for the anti-immigration Progress Party, Store’s coalition managed to retain control.

Following the result, Store thanked his supporters and highlighted the relevance of the win for social democratic movements across Europe.

“It proves that Social Democrats can still win in today’s Europe,” he said, as reported by Euro News.

PM Modi and Store last met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where both leaders reviewed progress in bilateral relations and agreed to deepen engagement in emerging sectors.

The Indian Prime Minister’s Office had described their discussions as wide-ranging and forward-looking.

India–Norway Strategic Cooperation

Their previous engagement focused on sectors such as the blue economy, renewable energy, green hydrogen, solar and wind energy, geothermal power, and green shipping.

The leaders also discussed critical technologies such as Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage (CCUS), as well as joint interests in space cooperation, fisheries, and Arctic exploration.

A key highlight of bilateral cooperation was the recent signing of the India–European Free Trade Association Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (India–EFTA–TEPA).

The agreement is expected to attract significant investments from EFTA countries, including Norway, and deepen economic ties.

As Jonas Gahr Store begins his renewed term as Norway’s Prime Minister, both countries are expected to advance mutual interests, especially in sustainability-driven growth, clean energy, and technological innovation.

PM Modi’s congratulatory message not only reaffirms strong diplomatic ties but also sets the stage for increased collaboration under a shared vision for sustainable development and regional stability.

The continued engagement between India and Norway signals a strategic partnership rooted in common values and a commitment to global cooperation.
