India raises security alert along Nepal border, warning that troublemakers could incite violence in neighbouring states following two days of protests.

Following two days of violent protests in Nepal, central agencies have raised a major security alert along the India-Nepal border, warning that troublemakers might take advantage of the unrest to incite violence in neighbouring Indian states.

Officials said intelligence reports indicated that anti-social elements might exploit the turmoil in Nepal. They warned these groups could create disturbances and damage public property in border areas.

Following the advisory, security forces along the border, including the Uttarakhand Police, UP Police, Bihar Police, and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) have been placed on high alert.

Heightened security has been deployed in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Bihar to safeguard law and order along the porous border.

Officers have been instructed to maintain maximum vigilance.

States Step Up Security Along Nepal Border

In Champawat, Uttarakhand, which borders Nepal’s Mahendranagar, security has been tightened following a curfew imposed by the Nepal Army.

In Pithoragarh’s Dharchula, another town along the porous border, residents are anxious about relatives across the frontier, prompting security officials to enhance surveillance in the area.

Similar precautions are in place in Madhubani, Bihar, where the SSB has been deployed at key border posts.

“Given the current situation in Nepal, Madhubani Police are fully alert, with all border police stations placed on high alert. All the circle inspectors and station staff are on the field, especially at border posts, maintaining round-the-clock vigilance,” Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar told IANS.

He further added, “People who are crossing the border are being allowed to do so with all the checking. We are checking the identifications. Our efforts are that no anti-social elements cross the border.”

In Uttar Pradesh, security has been stepped up in seven border districts:

  • Pilibhit,
  • Lakhimpur Kheri,
  • Bahraich,
  • Shravasti,
  • Balrampur,
  • Siddharthnagar, and
  • Maharajganj

Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna said the security strategy includes continuous patrolling and strict checks at entry points. He added that 73 checkpoints have been placed on heightened alert.

In Lakhimpur Kheri, Senior Superintendent of Police Sankalp Sharma asserted, “We are keeping a close watch on the law and order developments in Nepal. We are in constant coordination with the BSF and other security officials.”

Officials, however, reported that the situation at the Gaurifanta border, linking Pallia tehsil to Nepal’s Dhangarhi, remains tense. However, it is stable under strict surveillance.

Meanwhile, the India-Nepal border at Panitanki in Darjeeling district, West Bengal, has also been placed on high alert, with security forces maintaining round-the-clock vigilance.
