The Indian Army’s Western Command said on Wednesday that over 5,500 civilians and 300 paramilitary personnel have been rescued from flood-affected areas.
More than 3,000 civilians have received medical aid, while 27 tonnes of rations and essential supplies, delivered to cut-off communities.
Seven fresh Army columns deployed in Punjab’s Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Shahkot, Phillaur and Dhatewal, and in Sarala and Harchandpura, as water levels in the Ghaggar river continue to rise.
Relief Efforts on a Large Scale
The Western Command is conducting extensive Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations under Operation RAHAT across the Jammu-Pathankot sectors and flood-hit areas of Punjab.
More than 50 Army columns are active on the ground, working around the clock to rescue stranded residents, restore vital infrastructure and deliver emergency aid. Troopers are also assisting the civil administration and the Border Security Force (BSF) in clearing debris and undertaking emergency construction.
Engineer Regiments have rebuilt the Jaitpur Bund in the Mamun sector, repaired the main water supply line at the Sidhra bridge, and deployed heavy machinery to restore damaged roads between Bikraman helipad and Tawi viewpoint.
Army’s Lifesaving Evacuations
In Punjab, Army teams are reinforcing bunds at critical points, moving food and fodder to isolated villages and clearing blocked water channels to avert further flooding.
Amid these operations, troops airlifted a pregnant woman stranded in Sumb, a village completely cut off by road, to a hospital for urgent care. The evacuation highlighted the Army’s dedication to saving every life in the most difficult conditions.
The Western Command’s continuous and coordinated efforts under Operation RAHAT underscore its resolve to protect lives, support civil authorities and restore normalcy in flood-hit regions.
