Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo on Friday for a two-day official visit, where he will participate in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit, aimed at fortifying bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
This visit marks PM Modi’s eighth trip to Japan as Prime Minister, underlining the growing strength of Indo-Japanese relations.
This is PM Modi’s first bilateral summit with his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, since the latter took office earlier this year.
Their meeting is expected to provide fresh momentum to the robust partnership between the two nations, focusing on mutual interests in regional security, economic resilience, and technological innovation.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders will conduct a comprehensive review of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. This includes collaboration in defence and security, trade, innovation, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges.
Strengthening Economic & Strategic Cooperation
During the visit, PM Modi will also engage with leading Japanese industrialists and policymakers to discuss investment opportunities and strategic cooperation, especially in critical sectors such as semiconductors, clean energy, and digital infrastructure.
Leaders at the summit plan to issue a joint statement that outlines their shared positions on Indo-Pacific stability, resilient supply chains, and sustainable development.
“India and Japan share a time-tested bond, rooted in democratic values and a shared vision for regional peace and prosperity,” said a senior MEA official.
The leaders last interacted during the G7 Summit held in Canada this past June and previously at the ASEAN-India Summit in Laos. These frequent high-level engagements reflect the consistent diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties amid evolving global dynamics.
PM Modi’s last visit to Japan was in May 2023. His return to Tokyo reaffirms India’s strategic focus on East Asia, especially in light of growing regional tensions and the need for cooperative frameworks to ensure maritime and economic security.
Following his engagements in Japan, the Prime Minister will travel to China for the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). It will be his first visit to China in seven years and the first since the Galwan Valley clash in 2020.
Ahead of his departure, PM Modi expressed optimism on the social media platform X, stating, “The focus would be on deepening our Special Strategic and Global Partnership and boosting economic and cultural linkages.”
