Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, on his first official three-day visit to India, is set to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday.
To mark the occasion, Prime Minister Modi will host a lunch in honour of his Fijian counterpart.
Accompanied by his spouse, Sulueti Rabuka, the visiting leader has brought with him a senior delegation, including Fiji’s Health and Medical Services Minister, Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, and other top officials.
The visit comes amid growing momentum in India–Fiji relations, following President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit to Fiji in August 2024.
On that occasion, she addressed the Fijian Parliament and underlined the two nations’ shared democratic values and cultural ties.
Union Minister of State for Education and Development of the Eastern Region, Dr Sukanta Majumdar, received Prime Minister Rabuka with a ceremonial welcome at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Sunday.
Strengthening Regional Cooperation
As part of his programme, Rabuka will deliver a lecture titled ‘Ocean of Peace’ at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) in New Delhi. The address will highlight regional stability, Indo-Pacific partnerships, and the significance of maritime cooperation in a changing global order.
During his stay, he will also call on President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, reaffirming the importance of high-level political engagement between the two nations.
The trip follows the 6th round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between India and Fiji, held in Suva in July 2025.
The discussions reviewed cooperation in health, education, capacity building, trade and investment, agriculture, renewable energy, climate change, and cultural exchange.
The Indian delegation was led by Neena Malhotra, Secretary (South), Ministry of External Affairs, while Raijeli Taga, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, represented the Fijian side. Both parties reiterated their commitment to expand cooperation and sustain regular political dialogue.
Officials note that Prime Minister Rabuka’s visit will further bolster India’s Act East policy and its wider Indo-Pacific outreach, while reinforcing historical bonds and people-to-people connections. The talks will produce new initiatives in areas of mutual interest and pave the way for a stronger partnership in the years ahead.
