A viral post circulating on social media has falsely claimed that toll tax is being collected from two-wheeler vehicles at toll plazas situated on national highways and expressways across India.
The claim quickly spread online, sparking confusion among motorists.
The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit (PIB Fact Check) intervened on Thursday to clarify the matter.
The clarification directly states that toll plazas on national highways and expressways operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) do not charge any user fee from two-wheeler vehicles.
The bureau stressed that such reports are misleading and urged citizens not to fall for unverified information circulating on social media.
The Yamuna Expressway Case
PIB Fact Check clarified that the viral video does not pertain to an NHAI-operated road. Instead, it concerns the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh, which the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) manages.
Unlike NHAI highways, where rules are uniform nationwide, the toll rates on the Yamuna Expressway are determined by YEIDA. The authority, being a state-level body, operates independently and sets its toll policies.
Warning Against Misinformation
Authorities have repeatedly reminded the public to remain vigilant against misinformation online. PIB Fact Check urged users to verify any such claims from official government sources before sharing them further.
“Stay vigilant! Do not believe in misleading information and refrain from spreading it,” the bureau advised in its public message.
