
Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, who allegedly attacked Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at Wednesday’s Jan Sunvai event, will appear before Tis Hazari Court in Delhi on Thursday, police confirmed.
An attempt to murder case was filed against the 41-year-old on the same day.
Officers said they would seek a police remand of five to seven days to establish the motive behind the incident.
Delhi Police said in a statement, “In the matter of the attack on the Chief Minister, a case u/s 109(1)/132/221 BNS has been registered at PS Civil Lines. The accused has been taken into police custody. Further investigation is going on. We are investigating it from all the possible angles.”
The charges include attempt to murder, obstructing a public servant, and preventing a public servant from carrying out official duties.
Investigators added that central agencies and the Special Cell are questioning the suspect.
According to police, Rajesh travelled from Rajkot to Delhi by train on Tuesday morning. This was his first visit to the capital.
He stayed at Gujarati Bhavan in Civil Lines, then visited Chief Minister Gupta’s private residence in Shalimar Bagh. He also mentioned this to a friend over a phone call, officials said.
Details of his past criminal record have also surfaced. At least five cases were registered against him at Bhaktinagar Police Station in Rajkot.
He was acquitted in four, while one remains pending, with the next hearing scheduled for 9 September.
Police said they have contacted their counterparts in Gujarat for further details, though official confirmation is still awaited.
